BACKGROUND

Do Kyungsoo learned at a young age that being ordinary was a constant in life. Not for his family, though, only himself. His parents were successful business partners, his brothers (eight and twelve years his senior) were successful by the time Kyungsoo reached puberty. With his eldest brother opening up his own clinic in their hometown of Goyang and his middle brother on the path of becoming a criminal psychologist, there was no room for Kyungsoo to make an image for himself.
It took Kyungsoo until the age of thirteen to realize that his parents had him for no other reason than simple to be a back up. He was “Plan B” just in case one of his brothers failed their parents’ expectations, a child they could turn to with those same expectations. But his brothers were successful, both of them, and Kyungsoo became extra baggage in the family.
As he grew up, he knew it wasn’t only his family that doubted his ability to achieve. Teachers, relatives, and even friends complimented him on ordinary achievements rather than pushing him to chase his brother’s success. He knew they saw him as the smiley, silly-looking boy, and they believed that achieving average grades was more than anyone could ask of him.

Kyungsoo graduated high school in a somewhat average academic tier. He learned quickly that regular school subjects would never be his forte but quickly found a passion in music. He was sucked into the different way to combine flats and sharps and sixteenth notes and quarter notes into something so beautiful, the different ways he could change his voice to fit each emotion.
The one and only time his parents showed interest they asked him what he wanted to do and he responded with a heartfelt,
Music.
His parents and brothers scoffed and laughed. Just like you Kyungsoo. Nothing more than average anyway. You’ll never end up anywhere if you stay this way. Learn now and you can at least take over the family business
The lack of confidence and faith in him didn’t deter Kyungsoo from his desires. Rather than bowing under his family’s doubts, he used the opportunity to show them that he could and would pursue his passions. He joined choir at school, performed on stage as many times as he could to chase that rush of music in his veins. Performing was an addiction, and like any addiction it raced through his body at a fiery speed.

For a graduation present (and thanks to a plea from his parents to keep him happy and at home), his eldest brother handed down his own car.
Treat her nicely.
What that ending up being translated into was Kyungsoo careening down roads at speeds he didn’t care if the car could handle. He could hear the music in the engine as he sped down the freeway and that was all that mattered. The feeling of the wheels spinning underneath him, the adrenaline of the speed matching the adrenaline he felt on stage; nothing else mattered but gripping the wheel and holding onto that feeling where he could find it

He packed his bags and moved out of the family house a month before his first semester of college. The pressure at home had built to a catalytic point, pushing him out to find some relief. His parents determined that Kyungsoo had no idea what he was doing with his life (uneducated, naïve) and demanded he change his major from music to something they deemed more appropriate and practical.
Follow the family business Kyungsoo. It’s not like you’ll find any thing else you’re good at anyway.
Kyungsoo ignored his parents and his brothers, drowned their pleas and desires out with music and rented a cramped one-bedroom apartment near school. He was lucky enough to find an easy job at a garage right in between his school and apartment. Kyungsoo worked three times a week as a receptionist, taking names, making appointments, and just helping around the office as much as possible.
He continued taking voice lessons at school, attended music classes and let himself fall deeper in love with everything he heard.

The first time he saw the car, he ignored the odd front grill, the strange bumper skirt, and just focused on the information he needed: Name, contact information, and what kind of payment he’d be making. The second and third time the same car was brought into their shop, (the third time, it was towed in), Kyungsoo started asking questions.
Who drives a car like this? What does a lower front end really mean? How do you crash a car that badly in Seoul traffic?
The mechanic never answered the questions in detail (or even at all) but simply shrugged, rolled his eyes, and went back to work.
The next time the owner of the car stepped into his office, Kyungsoo was prepared with questions.
Can I ask you some questions?
Does this have anything to do with my payments?
No, but—
Don’t worry about it then.
It took weeks of building up the courage to ask again but by the fifth and final visit, Kyungsoo’s question was answered with a business card.
You’re too curious for your own good. But he says you’ve got the potential.
Potential for what Kyungsoo didn’t know, but thanked him anyway and tucked the card into his back pocket.

The road to the track was complicated that first night. He pulled up behind the car he recognized from the shop and ignored the looks he got as he stepped out of the car. Short, child-like, absurdly large smile, wide-eyed and out of place.
A man approached him, easily standing over him, and told him that he had the wrong place. This isn’t a playground. Kyungsoo shrugged, smiled wide, and stepped around him. He approached the Honda, a group of men huddled around the hood of the car. A pat on the back and introductions followed.
This is D.O.
Kyungsoo watched silently as the teams lined up and raced down the road. He could hear the treble of violins as they turned a corner quickly, the pounding of drums as they came towards the finish line, the roar of trumpets as the winning team shouted in happiness. He could hear the music and he wanted it all.

It took many more months and many more appearances at races before Kyungsoo was allowed to drive a race solo. It took a lot of hard work at the garage, figuring out the best configurations for his own race, working out how to re-create the music he kept hearing on the track
His first race wasn’t a disaster, but Kyungsoo lost himself in the anticipation of the orchestra. A step ahead of the conductor doesn’t mean you’re ahead of the game. Kyungsoo was a little off, and while he didn’t lose he also didn’t win. The stakes weren’t high but he was scolded nonetheless.
Kyungsoo learned the correct tempo and time measurement that night, and it would lead to him farther than he ever expected to go.
FACTS
a.Drives a 2006 Honda S2000, a hand-me-down from his middle brother. Looks pretty much the same from when his brother had it apart from the kit he added on in early 2008. Hasn’t settled on what kind of car he wants to get next, but he knows he prefers four wheels to two.
b. Enjoys music more than anything else. Probably more than he’ll ever love racing. At twenty-one, Kyungsoo decided he wanted to be an idol, but with a Bachelors in Music, he simply writes music for entertainment companies. He hasn’t sold a song yet, but he’s hoping for a break soon.
c. Joined Silver Blaze after its official formation. After the incident (Kyungsoo doesn’t like even officially putting a label on it), Kyungsoo’s races had slowed down. He worked more hours at the garage, getting to know things about his car that he wasn’t so interested in before. It was a good trade off for when the team came back together, and Kyungsoo is a little more experienced and confident because of it.
d. His nickname simply comes from his last name: Do à D.O. On the many occasions when he’s asked about it, he tries to pretend it stands for something, but he still can’t figure out what it might be.
e. Kyungsoo is excitable and friendly and really enjoys the company of people. He rarely gets angry but when he does it’s a flip of a coin on how he’ll react
